The Butcher Secret Kitchen: Secrecy & Mystique in Amsterdam

The Butcher Secret Kitchen: Secrecy & Mystique in Amsterdam

The invitation to The Butcher's Secret Kitchen was steeped in mystique; beginning with instructions informing me where to be, what to say and at what time. It came days before my adventure in Europe was set to begin but it sent chills down my spine, enticing me with the idea of what kind of culinary ventures awaited me on the other side of the Atlantic. When I pulled up to The Butcher location that housed this secret experience, I was swallowed whole in mystery, secrecy and indulgence.

We were met with strange eyes from those waiting in line for a burger. We carried American accents, were dressed to impress and our eyes wandered wildly looking for any sign of where we were to slip away. After whispering the codeword to a worker, we found ourselves passing through walls and into a darkened chamber where a woman took our coats and beckoned us into a room vibing with a buzzing bar and pulsating music.

Staff clad in brooding clothes and dark smiles blessed us with a variety of cocktails while a small, approachable menu lay out before us. Pete and I smiled knowing we were in for some type of experience we had never had. Each cocktail was better than the last and dishes of simple design and grand flavor complimented each plate perfectly.

The Secret Kitchen is a place where both friends can party and lovers can mingle. The brooding ambiance sets a tone that can play to a variety of themes and I found that versatility to create a great experience for all who were there. The Surf n Turf Burger fused together tender beef and lobster with a mushroom twist that gave it an Earthy element while the Ribs sunk my taste buds into a place of peaceful existence.

Playing upon the Speakeasy culture that runs rampant throughout Europe, The Butcher's Secret Kitchen is a novel experience for those enthused by genuinely great grub and cocktails. Though I'm never one to give up a secret, a quick Google search should help you find the directions on how to land a seat here. It's a mystery worth uncovering.

Always hungry,

Salvatore DiBenedetto
